In and around Bainbridge
The
Old Hall is at the top of the village of Bainbridge with its waterfall on
the shortest river in England - the River Bain - to enjoy as you walk down
to the garage for the morning paper...
...
past the village shop and the excellent Corn Mill tea shop, past the butchers
- 'Gadges' sausages are to die for - and you'll probably find it the most
entertaining butchers shop you've ever seen.
Then for lunchtime and evenings there is the Rose & Crown Hotel with bar snacks and restaurant at the other end of the village.
Bainbridge is ideally situated for walkers and cyclists, within easy reach of many public footpaths and bridleways including a 7 km ancient Roman road, a must downhill for mtb'ers.
Other places of interest and things to see and do
For a change of scene there is the village of Askrigg one and a half miles away with the Crown and/or the Kings Head made famous in the All Creatures Great and Small television series.
The excellent market town of Hawes is 4 miles to the West with various pubs, an Indian take-away and Reg's excellent fish and chip shop. Market day is Tuesday. Here you will also find the Dales Countryside Museum, a working Ropeworks and the famous Wensleydale Creamery. This is the home of Wensleydale Cheese and is open for visitors.
The 'Chippy' van visits Bainbridge every Wednesday between 1700 and 1800 hrs and is highly recommended, especially washed down with a glass or two of Chardonnay.
